The Village of Laughton is steeped in history. Its church dates back to 1229. Lord Thomas Cromwell had right of Patronage until he subsequently forfeited it to Henry VIII who in turn granted Laughton to Anne of Cleeves. There was once a notorious gang of smugglers and criminals called the 'Hawkhurst Gang' who regularly violated the old vaults in the churchyard. The story goes that one stormy night the robbers were about their deadly  work when a flashing thunderbolt gave the impression of striking the church itself. The robbers believed this was an act of god, and they fled in fear of their lives. The Roebuck is famous for its water well situated at the rear of the building. This weIl supplied many local homes with water up until the 1920's. Water was pushed to the local school in hand carts. The Roebuck ran a 'Slate Club'. One received ten shillings a week in illness and any money left over in the club was shared out at Christmas.

A very warm welcome awaits you!
